When the Assignment Changes

I think we’ve confused our assignments with our calling.

I know that’s a big statement.

But the more I’ve studied Joseph’s life, the more convinced I am that many of us—including me—have been using those words as though they mean the same thing.

I don’t think they do.

At the end of Joseph’s story, he tells his brothers:

“God sent me before you to preserve life.”— Genesis 45:5

That sentence has been sitting with me.

Because Joseph had done a lot by then.

He had managed Potiphar’s house. Overseen a prison. Interpreted dreams. Developed a strategy for famine. Governed Egypt.

But when Joseph looked back over his life, he didn’t describe himself by any of those assignments.

He said:

“God sent me before you to preserve life.”

What Joseph was describing was a revelation that came from looking back over the fullness of his story.

This month, I’ll turn 44. And I’m realizing that I’ve been looking at my own life through such a limited lens.

I’ve spent so much time looking at the individual chapters—what I was doing, what I accomplished, what ended, what changed—that I haven’t always stepped back far enough to ask what God has been doing through all of it.

And now I’m starting to look at my life with greater clarity and, even more importantly, a greater understanding of how God has been at work through all of it.

Calling, Expression, Assignment

We use the word calling for almost everything.

I’m called to lead.

I’m called to write.

I’m called to entrepreneurship.

I’m called to ministry.

But I’m starting to wonder if some of the things we’ve identified as our callings are simply expressions and assignments.

An expression is how something God placed in you shows up.

An assignment is where, with whom, or for what season He asks you to use it.

They’re connected.

But they’re not the same.

Joseph’s assignments changed constantly.

But something kept showing up.

He could steward.

He could lead.

He could discern.

He could be trusted with responsibility.

Put him in Potiphar’s house, it showed up.

Put him in prison, it showed up.

Put him before Pharaoh, it showed up.

The assignment changed. The thread remained.

Maybe that’s a question worth asking:

Not only, What was I doing?

But:

What has God consistently been doing through me?

An Ending Doesn’t Mean You Missed God

Joseph was doing well in Potiphar’s house.

Scripture tells us the Lord was with him.

Then he was falsely accused and sent to prison.

Joseph was faithful.

And the assignment still ended.

That matters.

Because sometimes when something ends, we assume we misunderstood God.

But an ending by itself isn’t proof that we missed Him.

Potiphar’s house wasn’t a mistake because Joseph didn’t stay there.

It was part of the story.

But if assignments can end, there’s a harder question:

How do we know when one is actually over?

We don’t get to call an assignment finished simply because we’re tired of it.

Sometimes we’re restless.

Sometimes we’re frustrated.

And sometimes God really is saying:

It’s time.

That’s where discernment comes in.

And once we know what God is asking, obedience comes next.

Sometimes obedience means staying.

Sometimes it means leaving.

Sometimes it means starting something we don’t feel ready for.

Sometimes it means releasing something that’s still working.

Not every uncomfortable assignment is over. And not every successful assignment is yours to keep.

Ultimately, our job isn’t to build the life that feels most aligned with us.

It’s to align our lives with God.

Pay Attention to the Whole Story

Maybe we’ve been trying to define our calling by looking too closely at one chapter.

Before asking God, What’s next? maybe we need to look back.

Not just at the résumé.

At the whole story.

What has God consistently entrusted to you?

What keeps showing up, even when the room changes?

What has God been doing through you all along?

Joseph couldn’t see the fullness of his story from Potiphar’s house.

Or from prison.

It took time before he could look back and say:

God sent me to preserve life.

As I’ve grown, I’ve started asking God what He wants me to do instead of telling Him what I’m going to do and asking Him to bless it.

That’s a very different way to live.

It requires me to hold my plans more loosely.

To pay attention when something is shifting.

To stop assuming that because something worked in one season, it belongs in the next.

And to trust that when God changes the assignment, He hasn’t lost the plot.

Maybe that’s what Joseph understood in hindsight.

The assignment changed more than once.

The story didn’t.
